Position Summary

Applicants who are certified as Swim and Lifesaving Instructors along with National Lifeguard certification will be considered first.

All applicants must:

  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number.
  • Be at least 15 years of age.
  • Create a profile using their personal email address.
  • Provide their valid Lifesaving Society ID for certification verification. (Your LSS ID can be found on the bottom right corner of your permanent Lifesaving Society certification card)
  • Have a valid Standard First Aid with CPR-C certification.

 

No resume or cover letter is required to apply for the Aquatic Employment job posting. Positions report to the Aquatic Supervisor and Aquatic Coordinator.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Aquatic Attendants are responsible for assisting Aquatic Lifeguards & Swim Instructors during recreational swims and instructional lessons. The successful candidate will be responsible for the supervision of patrons using the slide, you will also assist with customer service, public education, swimming regulations and responsible for maintaining clean change rooms and pool deck areas.
 
Aquatic Lifeguards are responsible for ensuring the safety of all patrons in and around the aquatic facility, by preventing and responding to all emergencies and maintaining a safe aquatic environment. 
 
Aquatic Swim Instructors are responsible for teaching, delivering, and evaluating the Lifesaving Society’s Swim for Life and Lifesaving programs in accordance with program standards. The Aquatic Swim Instructor will lead specific drills/instruction according to prepared lesson plans while creating a fun, safe and positive learning environment to participants of all ages. 
 
Hired applicants who are not certified as Swim and Lifesaving Instructors along with National Lifeguard must become fully certified prior to their second session of employment. Employees are only able to work in positions based on their valid certifications.
 
Employees are responsible to recertify all their required awards before they expire. 
All Standard First Aid & CPR-C awards expire 3 years from the date of certification.
Lifesaving Society awards expire 2 years from the date of certification. 
(Bronze Cross, National Lifeguard, Swim Instructor, Lifesaving Instructor & Emergency First Aid Instructor)

If applicants do not hold a National Lifeguard certification, they must maintain a valid Bronze Cross certification.

Applicants who are not fully certified with Swim and Lifesaving Instructors, National Lifeguard and Standard First Aid with CPR-C may be considered if all fully certified candidates have not filled all available positions.

Not all pools hire applicants each session.

Education and Experience

  • All Aquatic positions require Standard First Aid with CPR-C recognized by WSIB.

  • Aquatic Swim Instructor I ($21.38):  Standard First Aid with CPR-C, National Lifeguard - Pool, Swim Instructor & Lifesaving Instructor.

  • Aquatic Swim Instructor II ($19.23): Standard First Aid with CPR-C, Bronze Cross, Swim Instructor & Lifesaving Instructor.   

  • Aquatic Lifeguard ($19.23): Standard First Aid with CPR-C, National Lifeguard - Pool.

  • Aquatic Attendant ($17.60): Standard First Aid with CPR-C, Bronze Cross.

Required Skills/Knowledge

  • Ability to perform rescue skills at or above the level of your certification.

  • Ability to work as part of an effective aquatic team.

Demonstrate and maintain the following physical standards:

Object Recovery & Transport: Starting in the water, swim 15m and surface dive to recover a 20lb object from bottom of deep end, surface and carry the object 5m.  

Approach & Tow/Carry: Starting in the water, approach 15m head-up to contact a distressed victim in deep water, carry/tow the victim 5m supporting victim’s shoulders at the surface and head above the surface. 
Spinal Rescues: Starting in the water, approach a suspected spinal injured victim in water, immobilize, roll victim over and move where required.
Rescue Drill: Starting in the water, swim to recover a submerged manikin 20m away, carry the manikin 20m with its mouth and nose above the surface throughout.
Speed: Swim 50 meters in 60 seconds or less.
Endurance: Swim 400 meters in 10 minutes or less.
