Position Summary

Aquatic Attendant, Aquatic Lifeguard & Aquatic Swim Instructor will report to the Aquatic Supervisor and Aquatic Coordinator.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

All Aquatic Positions will assist in equipment set up and take down for the activity/program on the pool deck; assist with facility maintenance where required; complete accident/incident reports as required and, perform other duties as assigned.

Aquatic Attendants are responsible for assisting Aquatic Lifeguards during recreational swims. They are responsible for the supervision of patrons using the slide. They will assist with customer service/public education, be knowledgeable of swimming regulations and be responsible for maintaining clean change rooms and pool deck areas.

Aquatic Lifeguards are responsible for ensuring the safety of all patrons in and around the aquatic facility, by preventing and responding to all emergencies and maintaining a safe aquatic environment.

Aquatic Swim Instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating Lifesaving Society’s programs in accordance with program standards. Aquatic Swim Instructors will lead specific drills/instruction according to prepared lesson plans while creating a fun, safe and positive learning environment to participants of all ages.

Education and Experience

All Aquatic Positions require Standard First Aid with CPR “C” through one of the following agencies: Lifesaving Society (preferred), Canadian Ski Patrol, Red Cross or Saint John’s Ambulance.

Aquatic Attendant: 15 years of age, Lifesaving Society Bronze Cross and Lifesaving Society Assistant Instructor certifications.

Aquatic Lifeguard: 16 years of age and Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard (Pool) certification.

Aquatic Swim Instructor: 16 years of age, Bronze Cross OR Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard (Pool) certification, Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor certification, Lifesaving Society Lifesaving Instructor certification, Lifesaving Society Emergency First Aid Instructor certification.

Aquatic Volunteer experience with the City of Richmond Hill is an asset.

Required Skills/Knowledge

Demonstrate and maintain the following physical standards:

Rescue drill: Starting in the water, swim to recover a submerged manikin 25m away, carry the manikin 25m with its mouth and nose above the surface throughout, all within 90 seconds.

Deep end spinal: Starting in the water, approach a face-down victim in deep water, immobilize, roll victim over and carry 15m while using a lifesaving kick.

Approach and carry: Starting in the water, approach 15m head-up to contact a distressed victim in deep water, carry the victim 5m supporting the victim’s head and shoulders above the surface. 

Object recovery: Starting in the water, swim 15m and surface dive to recover a 20lb. object from bottom of deep end, surface and carry the object 5m, all within 40 seconds.

Ability to teach and perform rescues at or above the level of your certification. Excellent customer service and communication skills both verbal and written. Be familiar with and execute the City of Richmond Hill Aquatic emergency procedures. Ability to demonstrate the City’s corporate values of service, collaboration, care and courage.
