Position Summary

The Aquatic Leader is responsible for providing assistance to the program and service delivery of Aquatic programs including, administration functions, on deck leadership and supervision of staff and volunteers for instructional programs, recreational swims and private pool rentals.

In addition, the Aquatic Leader is responsible to provide strong leadership, motivation and supervision of part-time Attendants, Lifeguards, Swim Instructors, Deck Supervisor and Volunteers, evaluation of staff performance, complete all maintenance tasks and ensure reporting procedures and follow up are completed in accordance with the aquatic policies and procedures.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Open and close the facility in accordance with the opening and closing procedures.
  • Lead staff in day to day operations, follows up and communicates with full time staff
  • Provide on deck supervision during assigned instructional programs
  • Provide direct supervision and evaluation of Swim Instructors, Lifeguards, Aquatic Attendants and Volunteers to maintain program quality
  • Provide Aquatic Supervisor with detailed information on program status, customer feedback, inventory and maintenance/upkeep of equipment
  • Delivers new staff orientations
  • Assist with growth and development of staff
  • Assist in preparation and delivery staff trainings to ensure staff have the necessary knowledge of city policies and procedures 
  • Ability to complete rescue skills at the Lifesaving Society’s National Lifeguard Pool standard
  • Assists in preparation of aquatic staff schedules
  • Supervise recreational swims and pool rentals
  • Tally, verify, input and track part time payroll
  • Respond to and leads aquatic team in emergencies, ensuring follow up with reporting procedures as per City of Richmond Hill policies and procedures

Duties and Responsibilities Cont'd (if applicable)

  • Provide leadership and direction to part time aquatic staff and volunteers during designated shift including mentoring and coaching
  • Assist the Aquatic Supervisor with inventory, purchase and deliver of program supplies
  • Provide input and feedback to Aquatic Supervisor regarding Lifeguard, Swim Instructor, Attendant and Volunteer performance/evaluation
  • Performs instructional, lifeguarding and deck supervisor duties as required
  • Assist with facility maintenance including chemical testing where required
  • Assist reception staff with program registration, membership sales and cash management where required
  • Preparing and maintaining statistical information on instructional and recreational swims
  • Maintain all qualifications and keep current copies on file at each work location
  • Effectively deal with customer inquiries, exhibiting excellent customer service
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

Education and Experience

  • Secondary School Diploma or equivalent
  • Current Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard (Pool) Certification
  • Current Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor Certification
  • Current Lifesaving Society Lifesaving Instructor Certification
  • Current Lifesaving Society Emergency First Aid Instructor Certification.
  • Current Standard First Aid with CPR Level C
  • Lifesaving Society Aquatic Supervisor Training
  • Lifesaving Society Bronze Examiner   
  • Diploma in Recreation Leadership and advanced aquatic leadership certifications such as Standard First Aid Instructor/Examiner and National Lifeguard Instructor/Examiner would be an asset 

Required Skills/Knowledge

  • Ability to independently resolve problems and issues under minimal supervision
  • Familiar with ActiveNet software and SAP
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications with a strong knowledge of Word
  • demonstrated experience in coaching, team building and supervising and developing staff to achieve high levels of performance
  • Well organized, independent and highly-motivated, with the ability to handle multiple job responsibilities, set priorities, problem solve and work with all levels of staff while appreciating the responsibility of meeting tight and conflicting deadlines
  • Proven interpersonal skills to foster and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of internal stakeholders, demonstrating high proficiency in conflict resolution and negotiation skills
