Position Summary

Reporting through the Cultural Services Section of the Recreation and Culture Division, the Cultural Services Assistant, Arts & Culture will assist with the research, implementation, and execution of the City of Richmond Hill’s Recreation & Culture Plan Recommendations. This position reports to the Culture Coordinator and is responsible for assisting with the development and delivery of arts and culture programming, services, events, activities, and initiatives for the community.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists with the research, implementation, and execution of the City of Richmond Hill’s Recreation & Culture Plan Recommendations 
  • Assists with the creation of an in-depth and robust plan for the carrying out of identified Recommendations in the City of Richmond Hill’s Recreation & Culture Plan
  • Assists with the development of programming at the potential Old Post Office/Cultural Centre
  • Works with permit holders at Boynton House Art Exhibition Space and Beverly Hills Condo Creative Space 
  • Assists with developing arts and culture programs; including implementation, marketing and promotion, recruiting specialized instructors, verifying supply lists and program supplies, and budget preparation. 
  • Recruits artists and arts-related community groups/organizations to enhance City-led events both within and outside the Cultural Services section.
  • Prepares exhibits and / or displays related to arts and culture; this includes overseeing arts and culture program display cases in facilities and Visual Art Gallery exhibits in venues around the City. 
  • Assists with benchmarking and comparative analysis of program and service fees with other municipalities and arts/cultural organizations.
  • Prepares, coordinates and assists in delivering arts and culture related events, including but not limited to the Cultural Summit, and the annual ArtWalk & Studio Tour.
  • Assists with administering the community and cultural grant program as needed.
  • Supports arts related initiatives including Artists in Residence, community mural projects, and other areas as needed identified in the Recreation and Culture Plan.
  • Assist with budget preparation for arts and culture programs and events. 
  • Participates in volunteer recruitment and training for programs and events within the portfolio.
  • Maintains databases of instructors and recruits new instructors to offer varying arts programs. 
  • Assists in preparing and entering program descriptions into ActiveNet. 
  • Works with the marketing and promotions portfolio to create applicable marketing materials for arts and culture programs and events.
  • Prepares any reports or statistics as may be requested relevant to the Section.
  • Performs all required administration functions in accordance with City Policy and Procedure. 
  • Report to work promptly.
  • Attend scheduled staff meetings and staff training sessions.

Education and Experience

  • Post-Secondary Education in Fine Arts or Arts Administration, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Current Emergency First Aid Certification     
  • A valid Ontario Driver’s License and use of a vehicle for corporate business is essential (mileage compensated)
  • Satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector check upon hiring
  • 1-3 years related experience in art programming and event delivery
