Position Summary

Reporting to a Manager of Policy, the Intern will provide program related assistance to the Policy Section. This is a 4-month contract position.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Undertake research and analysis related to the development of land use policy and guidance documents to assist with updating of the City’s Official Plan and other policy planning projects;
  • Monitor and report on relevant Provincial/Regional land use planning trends and issues; 
  • Undertake detailed statistical analysis and modelling of existing and potential development on a site specific and City-wide scale using appropriate software supplied by the City;
  • Assist with preparing for internal/external meetings and public consultation events; 
  • Perform clerical duties such as organizing files/documents, preparing meeting minutes etc. as needed;
  • Attend meetings and events related to policy planning projects.

Education and Experience

  • Recent graduate, or currently enrolled in graduate or undergraduate post-secondary program in urban and regional planning, geography or other related field.

Required Skills/Knowledge

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and written.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, SketchUp, GIS, and related software is an asset.
  • Strong organization skills and the ability to prioritize and multi-task
  • Strong research and analytical skills. 
  • Ability to effectively handle demanding customer expectations and respond quickly to changing priorities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive and professional relationships with a wide range of stakeholder groups.
  • Demonstrate the City's corporate values.
  • Available to work outside of regular business hours, if needed
  • Possess a valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license.
  • Provide own transportation to conduct site visits (mileage compensated).
  • You will be required to provide proof of vehicle insurance
