Position Summary

Reporting to the Urban Forestry Supervisor, the successful candidates will work both in the office and in the field to independently carry out tree inventory and insect/disease surveys on streets, parks, and municipal properties with compilation of data and report creation.  Also investigating and assisting with enquiries from the public on tree related issues on Public Property. You will be competent in performing a general assessment of the tree's overall health and structural condition.  You can confidently identify tree species commonly found in the area.  All duties must be performed in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Town policies, procedures and practices. You must be physically able to perform manual outdoor labour in all weather conditions and safely lift up to 23 kg. 

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ability to accurately identify trees, understand their characteristics and environmental needs/ tolerances
  • Ability to identify common insect and disease pests of trees, their life cycles, and control measures using IPM
  • Previous Urban Forestry tree maintenance/planting work experience
  • Knowledge of municipal government processes, responsibilities and organization
  • Strong organizational, business writing and office administration skills
  • Strong working knowledge of spreadsheet, database, word-processing, presentation programs and GIS/GPS computer inventory applications
  • Comfortable working outside (fieldwork) in all types of weather and you are able to exercise sound judgment when working in the field

  • Ability to work after hours or weekends when necessary

Education and Experience
  • Recent graduate (within one year) or currently enrolled in a college or university program, preferably working towards a degree in Forestry Technician, Forestry Conservation Technician, Arboriculture, Urban Arboriculture Technician or related field
  • Experience in a municipal government setting would be considered an asset
Required Skills/Knowledge
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and written
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong organization skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and the ability to prioritize are a requirement
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • The successful candidate should be an enthusiastic and creative team player
  • Effective interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive and professional relationships with a wide range of stakeholder groups
  • Demonstrate the City's corporate values
  • Comfortable working outside (fieldwork)
  • Possess your own CSA certified steel toe safety boots for fieldwork
  • Possess a valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license in good standing and must provide a satisfactory current Drivers Abstract from the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO)
