Position Summary

Reporting to the Supervisor, Roads and Traffic Operations, the Roads Operator is responsible for the maintenance and repair of City road infrastructure and operation of equipment.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Hot mix/cold mix patching; manhole and catch basin repairs; curb and sidewalk repairs; winter maintenance; spring clean-up; road patrol; sign installations and repair; pavement markings; traffic control; street light inspection; culvert installs and ditching; sod repairs; debris pick-up; street sweeping and all additional duties as required in Roads Operations
  • Standby and after-hours duties for winter operations are mandatory and only on occasion in the summer months
  • Complete daily circle checks on all vehicles and equipment and be proficient in trailering equipment safely
  • When applicable, train other employees on equipment
  • Set-up safe work zones as per traffic plans and contribute to tailgate discussions
  • Provide emergency response to mitigate risk – lane or road closures / flood response / sinkholes or any other types of emergency calls
  • All duties must be performed in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety
  • Aware and knowledgeable of all relevant legislation
  • Ensure health and safety compliance
  • Act, and City policies, procedures and practices
  • Associated responsibilities include providing documentation of work activity and detailed work records (Maximo) including description and photos or videos
  • Investigating and assisting with follow-ups to enquiries from the public
  • Read and understand stakeouts prior to any possible dig or install jobs assigned
  • Other duties as assigned

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma - Mandatory
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR Certification
  • Winter and Construction experience is preferred
  • Successful completion of the Anderson/Mahoney Construction and Maintenance Courses is an asset
  • Successful completion of (2) additional courses as outlined in the CUPE Local 905 Collective Agreement is an asset

Required Skills/Knowledge

  • Demonstrated experience in construction and maintenance of roadways
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of winter maintenance equipment
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and keep records
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Physically able to perform the physical demands of this position under adverse weather and site conditions
  • Problem solving skills
  • Ontario Class "DZ" Driver’s License in good standing and must provide a satisfactory current Drivers Abstract from the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO)
  • Requires satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Demonstrates good judgment and makes sound decisions
