Position Summary
Reporting to the Supervisors of Public Works Operations, the Outside Summer Student will be responsible for the following:
Key Duties and Responsibilities

Parks:
- Grounds maintenance, including litter collection, mowing, and trimming/edging
- Sports field maintenance, including line marking, turf cutting, and minor repairs to field amenities and equipment (e.g., goals, benches, fences, dugouts, etc.)
- Assist staff in the inspection, cleaning and repair of multiple park amenities e.g. playgrounds, splash pads and picnic shelters
- Horticultural maintenance: including planting, weeding and maintenance of annual, perennial and shrub beds along with other horticultural displays
- Operate various hand tools and powered equipment, including a pickup truck
- Arboriculture operations including small and large tree care
- Other duties as assigned
Energy and Waste
- Litter picking and planned garbage/recycling collection and disposal in parks
- Providing support for special events including delivery, set up, takedown, clean-up
- Other duties as assigned
Water/Roads
- Water Department- Traffic Control, Data Collection, Painting Fire Hydrants, Cleaning and maintenance
- Assist staff in the inspection, cleaning and repair road and water infrastructure
- Other duties as assigned
Education and Experience
- Be currently enrolled in a college or university as a full-time student and returning to school full time for the fall semester
Required Skills/Knowledge
- Demonstrate the City’s corporate values of care, collaboration, courage and service
- Previous experience working in a municipal setting outdoors would be considered an asset
- Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions
- Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to work in a team environment
- Ability to deal with the public courteously and effectively
- Must possess Green Patch CSA approved 8" safety boots
- Ontario Class "G" Driver’s License in good standing and must provide a satisfactory current Drivers Abstract from the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO)
- Ontario Class "G2" Driver's License may be considered
- Be able to work outdoors during all weather conditions and available to work 7 days a week including holidays
