Position Summary
Reporting to the Manager, Parks, the Summer Student-Parks will be responsible for the daily property maintenance of parks and sports fields throughout the City.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ground maintenance: including mowing, trimming activities
- Horticultural maintenance: including planting, weeding and maintenance of annual, perennial and shrub beds along with other horticultural displays
- Litter picking and garbage/recycling collection and disposal in parks
- Sports field maintenance including lining, turf, cutting, and repairs to sports fields
- Assist staff in the inspection, cleaning and repair of park amenities e.g. playgrounds, splash pads and picnic shelters
- Providing support for special events including delivery, set up and takedown
- Demonstrate the City’s corporate values of care, collaboration, courage and service
- Other duties as assigned
Education and Experience
- Be currently enrolled in a college or university as a full-time student and returning to school full time for the fall semester in September 2020.
Required Skills/Knowledge
- Demonstrate the City’s corporate values of care, collaboration, courage and service
- Previous experience working in a municipal setting outdoors would be considered an asset
- Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions
- Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to work in a team environment
- Ability to deal with the public courteously and effectively
- Must possess Green Patch CSA approved 8" safety boots
- Ontario Class "G" Driver’s License in good standing and must provide a satisfactory current Drivers Abstract from the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO)
- Be able to work outdoors during all weather conditions and available to work 7 days a week including holidays
