Position Summary

Reporting to the Public Education Officer, you will conduct various activities in support of fire prevention, public education, department goals and objectives, and special projects.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design, produce and deliver comprehensive fire and life safety education programs, public messages and learning materials tailored to diverse community needs
  • Coordinate fire services representation and participation at community and special events, and manage the planning and operation of department-led special events
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of effective fire and life safety public relation strategies
  • Maintain statistics on RHFES public education activities and initiatives
  • Maintain multiple social media platforms (X, Facebook, Linktr.ee, YouTube, Instagram) as well as Corporate website
  • Perform public relations, liaise and collaborate with other City divisions, partner agencies and community organizations
  • Seek out and prepare grant applications
  • Maintain inventory of educational materials for all programs and fire stations
  • Evaluate and approve life safety plans and fire drill scenarios
  • Carry out general inspections and assist with inspection activities 
  • Enforce the Ontario Fire Code
  • Deliver internal training to City and department personnel to raise awareness of fire prevention programs and activities

Education and Experience

  • Must possess a post-secondary degree or diploma in Teaching, Communications, Social Media Relations, Marketing, Writing, or related discipline or a 3 year post-secondary diploma in Fire Protection Technology
  • Must possess an NFPA 1035 Level II Fire and Life Safety Educator certification
  • NFPA 1041 Fire Service Instructor certification, NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector certification an asset
  • NFPA 1035 Youth Fire Setter Intervention Specialist an asset
  • Minimum of two (2) years of related experience with demonstrated aptitude in the field of education, marketing, or in fire and life safety education.
  • An equivalent combination of education and fire safety education experience may be considered.

  • Able to present before a large audience (virtual or in person) in a professional manor
  • Excellent organizational skills (e.g., tracking and planning) and ability to work effectively in a team-based environment as well as independently 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Canva), and social media platforms such as X, Instagram and Facebook.

  • Physically able to climb stairs and ladders, kneel, bend and walk for prolonged hours, lift and carry objects of varying weights
  • A satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Candidates must have a valid Class “G” drivers license in good standing
