Position Summary

Reporting to the Program Coordinator, Summer Camp and Outdoor Adventure, the Recreation Assistant, Summer Camp and Outdoor Adventure will provide assistance in the development and delivery of outdoor adventure programs and permits, summer camp, sports dome and challenge course activities. This position will follow the City's core values of Care, Collaboration, Courage, and Service. 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Research, develop, implement, supervise and evaluate Outdoor Adventure, Summer Camp and Challenge Course programs and permits in conjunction with the Program Coordinator

  • Supervise and oversee program and activity operations at all locations, including registered programs, permits, the sports dome and summer camp

  • Supervise and oversee the Challenge Course operations, staff training, programs and permits in conjuction with the Program Coordinator

  • Ensure that High 5 Principles of Healthy Child Development and physical literacy are included in programs for children

  • Instruct programs when required

  • Assist with the development and delivery of all marketing and promotion materials for the Adventure Series programs, Challenge Course and Summer Camp

Duties and Responsibilities Cont'd

  • Participate in the recruitment process of part time program and camp staff and volunteers, conduct training and orientations sessions for staff and volunteers

  • Ensure required training and qualifications are completed and valid such as First Aid, and Health and safety and HR training as well as specialized training for the Challenge Course activities

  • Develop, approve and implement  appropriate staff schedules for direct reports, as well as  verify payroll

  • Provide direction, guidance, supervision and performance evaluations for direct reports
  • Create a positive experience for patrons by providing exceptional customer service  

  • Respond to customer inquiries and program issues for all programs and permits
  • Responsible for tracking, preparing and forecasting budget needs

  • Perform administration functions in accordance with City policy and procedures as it relates to finance, purchasing, staff sign-up etc.   

Education and Experience

  • Diploma in Recreation Leadership or equivalent
  • Standard First Aid and CPR C certificate
  • Challenge Course Practitioner Level 1
  • HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development Certificate
  • 1-3 years of experience in a community or municipal recreation environment working in summer camp, outdoor recreation or challenge course

Required Skills/Knowledge

  • Understanding of recreation trends, especially as they relate to outdoor programming, summer camp and Challenge Course activities
  • Ability to independently resolve problems and issues under minimal supervision
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications with a strong knowledge of Excel and Word
  • Well organized, independent and highly-motivated, with the ability to handle multiple job responsibilities, set priorities, problem solve and work with all levels of staff
  • Proven interpersonal skills to foster and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, demonstrating high proficiency in conflict resolution and negotiation skills
  • Must possess a valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License, and have access to a vehicle for use on corporate business (mileage compensated) and will be required to provide proof of vehicle insurance upon hire
