Position Summary

Outside Summer Seasonal positions will be responsible for assisting with the daily operation and maintenance of various City assets within the Public Works Operation Division.  

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Horticultural maintenance: Assisting in planting, weeding and maintaining of annual, perennial and shrub beds along with other horticultural displays
  • Ground maintenance: Performing tasks such as mowing, trimming activities, and maintaining general cleanliness of park landscapes.
  • Parks Infrastructure: Performing field lining, gilling and various amenity repairs to sports fields.
  • Assist staff in the inspection, cleaning and repair of multiple park amenities e.g. playgrounds, splash pads and picnic shelters
  • Urban Forestry: Supporting small and large tree care activities.
  • Waste Management: Conducting regular litter picking and planned garbage/recycling collection and disposal of waste in parks.
  • Events: Providing support for special events, including delivery of materials, set up, takedown, and clean-up
  • Operate various hand tools and powered equipment, including a pickup truck (minimum ¾ ton truck) for diverse maintenance and operational tasks.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma
  • Post-secondary education in parks operations, horticulture, arboriculture, or related fields is an asset
  • Standard First Aid and CPR certification

Required Skills/Knowledge

  • Demonstrate the City’s corporate values of care, collaboration, courage and service
  • Previous experience working in a municipal setting outdoors would be considered an asset
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions
  • Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to work in a team environment
  • Ability to deal with the public courteously and effectively
  • Must possess Green Patch CSA approved 8" safety boots
  • Ontario Class "G" Driver’s License in good standing and must provide a satisfactory current Drivers Abstract from the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO)
