Position Summary

Reporting to the Senior Economic Development Officer, the Small Business Consultant coordinates and facilitates the small business and entrepreneurship programs through the Small Business Enterprise Centre.  You will assist and consult with small business entrepreneurs in the planning and establishment of a business, develop informative collateral materials, promote and implement entrepreneurship programs including programs for youth, as well as coordinate and plan small business related seminars. 

Assisting in the preparation of the Enterprise Centre annual business and strategic plans and reports is also part of this position along with performing outreach activities with community organizations and associations. 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides advice to small business entrepreneurs in the planning and establishment of a business
  • Conducts business plan reviews and provide advice regarding business plan development
  • Coordinates and plans small business related seminars and workshops
  • Performs outreach activities and manages relationships with community organizations and associations 
  • Develops information and resources for entrepreneurs
  • Markets the programs and services of the Enterprise Centre including preparation of marketing materials
  • Develops and distributes e-newsletters and other materials to the City’s small businesses
  • Supports and participates in the City’s economic development events as required
  • Maintains and updates the Small Business Enterprise Centre website and events calendar
  • Supports the Small Business Enterprise Centre social media accounts
  • Assists in the preparation of the Enterprise Centre annual business and strategic plans and reports
  • Participate and attend events held by partners and community stakeholders
  • Administers and executes ministry programs according to business plan
  • Assists in development and management of program budget(s)

Education and Experience

  • Degree in Business, Economics, Marketing or a related discipline
  • 3 years’ experience in a small business advocacy and learning environment or in a similar role

Required Skills/Knowledge

  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, coordinating multiple projects 
  • Highly motivated, results-focused and detail-oriented
  • Experience in business plan development
  • Must have excellent conceptual, interpersonal, presentation, time management, facilitation, project management, and negotiation skills
  • Computer literacy utilizing MS Office software applications with proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software applications
  • Superior communication, planning and organizational skills, along with a high comfort level coordinating and delivering seminars/presentations. 
  • Experience in a customer service focused environment and as part of a team
  • Shows commitment to relationship development and management
  • Knowledge of digital and social media marketing
  • Must possess a valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License, and have access to a vehicle for use on corporate business (mileage compensated) and will be required to provide proof of vehicle insurance upon hire
