Position Summary

RHCPA Teaching Artists will provide high quality instruction to participants in a specialized theatre program.  Participants may range in age from preschoolers to older adults. Teaching Artist will prepare a course outline and implement age-appropriate activities, ensure participant safety and engagement, follow policies and procedures, and work effectively with the RHCPA Education Coordinator. Teaching Artists will independently facilitate in-school workshops in and around York Region for students attending the RHCPA Education Series; and/or facilitate the Tots Theatre (parent and child) program at the RHCPA.

Hours of work vary and can include evenings and weekends. Workshops are scheduled around school timetables and Teaching Artist availability.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize and deliver high quality and stimulating lessons for all levels of participants
  • Travel to and from schools based on workshop schedules
  • Work independently in a school environment
  • With the assistance of the integration team and/or teachers, modify activities to ensure participants with disabilities are able to participate in programs and be fully integrated into the program setting.
  • Ensure there are a variety of activities in the program related to the type of activity being taught.
  • Ensure participant safety and security throughout the program 
  • Communicate and interact with participants and make everyone feel welcome
  • Report to work in sufficient time to ensure the program is ready to start on time
  • Provide a list of supplies/equipment and set up needs required for the program to the Program Coordinator

Duties and Responsibilities Cont'd (if applicable)

  • Supervise all aspects of the program including participants and volunteers.
  • Complete and submit all necessary paperwork in a timely manner (e.g. attendance records, drop in sheets, list of hours worked, etc.)
  • Assist the Program Coordinator with delivering program evaluations to participants
  • Wear assigned uniform/name tag
  • Attend scheduled staff meetings and training sessions prior to, during and outside regular programming hours.
  • Maintain excellent public relations at all times.
  • Maintain good communication with staff and volunteers, facility users, school administration and the Education Coordinator.
  • Understand and implement the policies and procedures of the Facility(s), and of the Community Services Department.
  • Represent the City of Richmond Hill in a cooperative, organized, enthusiastic and well-groomed manner.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule when required, including evenings and/or weekends
  • Must provide availability monthly to the Education Coordinator
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Must possess advanced certification or technical training in the theatre/drama/dance
  • High Five PHCD Certification is required if working with participants ages 4 – 12 years
  • Emergency First Aid and CPR-B
  • The successful applicant will be required to provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Screening.
  • Other corporate training requirements upon hire
