Position Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Energy and Waste, the Sustainable Energy Coordinator is responsible for tracking, analyzing and reporting energy use, and supporting the implementation of the City's Corporate Energy Plan that aims to reduce energy consumption/costs and meets the applicable energy regulatory requirements.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist with the implementation of the Corporate Energy Plan and track implementation progress
  • Provide technical support to other City departments on capital projects with energy-saving components including assistance with financial analysis and design
  • Identify barriers to implementation and provide solutions based on research and benchmarking
  • Secure incentive funding from the IESO and utility companies for all projects with energy conservation components and assist with monitoring and verification of energy savings
  • Research, pilot and recommend new energy efficient technologies, equipment and practices to determine if they are feasible for City wide implementation
  • Partner with other City departments to assist in implementing operating/behavioral changes to reduce energy use
  • Prepare and deliver energy awareness training to staff and provide engagement opportunities
  • Manage the process for tracking energy consumption and costs from utility bills into the City's energy tracking software
  • Review energy bills to identify billing errors and irregularities in consumption. Investigate the cause and assist with implementing solutions to address negative trends
  • Collect and provide real-time energy consumption data and trends to operational staff and senior management periodically
  • Assist with the development of energy efficient standards for new Corporate buildings
  • Support business case development with technical and financial analysis
  • Periodically lead capital projects providing project management for design and implementation, overseeing project budgets and schedules
  • Assist with the optimization of Building Automation Systems to improve energy efficiency. This includes reviewing control systems, operating schedules, and maintenance practices at City facilities to identify and implement energy savings opportunities
  • Compile annual energy consumption data from City facilities and report on corporate energy KPI
  • Provide progress updates on energy consumption and trend analysis to Senior Management as required
  • Participate in meetings, workshops, webinars, and forums related to energy efficiency and conservation
  • Keep up to date on new energy conservation opportunities, technologies and renewable energy systems
Education and Experience
  • Degree in Environmental Science, Civil Engineering or related discipline
  • Professional designation as a Certified Engineering Technician, Certified Engineering Technologist, Certified Energy Manager (CEM), a licensed professional engineer (P Eng) or equivalent qualifications is required
  • 5 years related experience
Required Skills/Knowledge
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Energy Management Software (i.e.RETScreen, EnergyCap), Energy Tracking Tools and logger
  • Experience quantifying energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, and interpreting the results
  • Experience with project management of energy conservation projects and funding applications under the Save on Energy program
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations
  • Extensive knowledge of energy management and conservation in municipal facilities including building systems (i.e. lighting, motors, BAS controls and HVAC systems)
  • Strong knowledge of Measurement and Verification Protocols required for energy projects
  • Understanding of electrical metering, load profiling and analyzing electricity rate impacts
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, i.e. tact and diplomacy, and the ability to build relationships and communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and written
  • Able to work well independently with minimal supervision and possess strong analytical and problem solving skills.
