Position Summary

In a manner consistent with Richmond Hill Public Library’s overall vision and purpose, this position will be responsible for collection development in all formats for a diverse and growing community, with a particular focus on material in physical formats.  Offers support to the Manager, Content Development, with the effective coordination of all tasks related to department functions. Engages the public by providing superior emerging technology/information service and reader’s advisory.   Responsible for the Department in the absence of the Manager.  Delivers excellent customer service in a culture of values.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  1. As an integral member of the Content Department:
    1. Strives to achieve the Library’s vision and fulfill its mission, guided by the strategic plan, annual business plan and policy
    2. Engages in an openly collegial manner
    3. Contributes to the ongoing advancement, implementation, measurement, evaluation and improvement of library collections. 
  2. Assists the Manager, Content Development, in organizing, monitoring, and providing content development functions, including but not limited to:
    1. Training and coaching staff
    2. Monitoring workflow and modifying daily tasks as necessary
    3. Acting as a resource person for staff 
  3. General collection development duties in selected formats. 
  4. Co-ordinates the selection and curation of print and other physical formal content and services for the Richmond Hill Public Library.

5.   Works closely with the Library’s vendors through the creation of periodical order/renewal lists, automatic release plans and standing orders to collect traditionally formatted materials.  

6.  Provides instruction to staff and customers in the use of new technologies.

7.  Provides superior emerging technology/information service and reader’s advisory to a wide range of library users. 

8.  Responsible for the Department in the absence of the Manager.

9.  Leads/participates on committees and interdepartmental teams, and attends relevant meetings, workshops and courses as required.

10.  Responsible for observing and following all established occupational health and safety procedures, to be aware of hazards in the workplace and preventative measures taken.  Takes an active part in protecting oneself, fellow staff members and library property by reporting all hazardous conditions and unsafe work procedures.  Adheres to the Employee Health and Safety Manual and to the Richmond Hill Public Library Health and Safety Policy. 

11.  Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Master of Library/Information Science Degree from an ALA accredited program.
  • Minimum of three years public library experience in collection development. 
  • Extensive knowledge of collection development, including selection, acquisitions and deselection. 
  • Demonstrated interest in merchandising collections.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Knowledge of collection management software (e.g. CollectionHQ).

 

Required Skills/Knowledge

  • Working knowledge of collection development and deselection in all formats. 
  • Working knowledge of the elements that make up superior public access to physical formats including current trends and resources.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide superior information service to diverse library users, including instruction and assistance in the use of new technologies.
  • Ability to work effectively with customers of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated understanding of public libraries and awareness of contemporary trends in services, programs and collections.
  • Ability to work effectively outside of traditional library activities and settings.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a team environment, with demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to excellent customer service.
