Position Summary

In a manner consistent with Richmond Hill Public Library’s overall vision and purpose, responsible for collection availability, including activities such as shelving of library materials and handling of returned materials back-of-house. Delivers excellent customer service in a culture of values. Works at any Richmond Hill Public Library location or offsite as necessary. Shedule is set but subject to change with two weeks notice; includes evening and weekend hours. Requires physical stamina to handle library materials in quantity

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Shelves library materials
  • Assists customers with locating materials on the shelf; refers other inquiries to the appropriate staff
  • Returns materials through a mechanized sorter
  • Sorts material by collection and orders it by call number on carts
  • Shelf-reads to ensure orderly collections
  • Shifts materials to create an even distribution of collections
  • Finds and retrieves materials from lists and on demand
  • Performs minor maintenance and repair of library materials
  • Assists with the processing of received material in Collections department
  • Empties material from drop boxes and brings it back-of-house for processing

  • Participates on committees and interdepartmental teams as required
  • Attends relevant meetings, workshops, and courses as required
  • Observes and follows all established occupational health and safety procedures.
  • Other duties consistent with responsibilities

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma
  • Experience working in a public library setting an asset

Required Skills/Knowledge

  • Commitment to superior superior customer service
  • An understanding of the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system
