Position Summary

In a manner consistent with Richmond Hill Public Library’s overall vision and purpose: engages the public by providing information and reader’s advisory service to adults, teens, and children; works within a team environment; ensures excellent customer service; and has a strong knowledge of technology.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supports a welcoming library environment
  • Engages the public and provides in-depth information service, using library sources and expertise to meet customers’ needs
  • Works on assigned projects for the Information Services department
  • Supports effective communication in the department
  • Seeks solutions to resolve customer interactions
  • Observes and follows all established occupational health and safety procedures
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Education and Experience

  • Currently enrolled in Master of Library/Information Sciences Degree program or Library Techniques Diploma 
  • Relevant experience applicable to the public library environment as asset

Required Skills/Knowledge

  • Understanding of the elements of public library information services including current trends, resources and technologies, including maker technologies
  • Ability to provide superior information service in a busy automated environment, including instruction and assistance in the use of new technologies
  • Ability to work effectively with customers of all ages and backgrounds
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and interpersonal skills, including the ability to:
    • Communicate effectively with a full range of customers and staff members;
    • Mediate and resolve conflict;
    • Provide instruction to customers of all levels of ability in the use of technology
